PGA Tour, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am preview, 1-4 February 2024

SuperSport, the biggest sports broadcaster in Africa, brings viewers on GOtv all the action from the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, live from the Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course in California, from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 February 2024.

This tournament was originally known as the Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur, or just the Crosby Clambake. After Crosby's death in 1977, the tournament was hosted by his family for eight years. The Crosby name was dropped after the 1985 event, and AT&T became the title sponsor in 1986.

The starting field consists of 80 professionals and 80 amateurs. Each professional is paired with an amateur partner. On the first two days, 80 two-person teams will play a ‘Better ball’ format with one round on Pebble Beach and the other round at Spyglass Hill. The pros also play an individual ‘stroke play’ format. On the last two days, only the pros will advance to the third and final rounds held at Pebble Beach.

This new format comes as a result of the PGA Tour selecting the tournament as one of eight signature events offering a purse of $20 million at a limited-field, no-cut event with elevated FedEx Cup points (750 for the winner compared to 500 at regular events).

“If you turned it around and we were never a pro-am and the Tour said, hey, guys, guess what? We’re going to give you two days of a pro-am, Thursday and Friday. We would be elated,” said Steve John, CEO and tournament director of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, the non-profit that runs the tournament at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill.

“Yes, we’re two days instead of three, possibly four, but it’s going to be a darn good two days. The experience for the amateurs will be the best ever.”

The notable amateurs in the field include notable athletes such as Tom Brady, Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers, Pau Gasol, Larry Fitzgerald and Buster Posey.

The pro golf field, meanwhile, will boast world ranking leader Scottie Scheffler, former major champion Rory McIlroy and reigning FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland.
